White Camelias by Anton van den Bergh
The unfettered, colourful, bold and innovative quality of Anton van den Bergh in his art made his paintings irresistible and sought after by collectors the world over.
"It is nearly a mystical experience as one becomes involved in an illusionary encounter with Anton's art. The bold and sometimes primary colours combined with simplistic lines and shapes takes one to a different level of awareness!" an awed admirer said.
In his contemporary ethnic African inspired art, influenced by his New Zealand experiences, his paintings show that technique should not overpower the most essential aspect in any art, namely COMMUNICATION, this resulting in REALITY, AFFINITY and UNDERSTANDING.
"Over the years I have made many friends with people who enjoy, appreciate and understand my art. I am deeply concerned with the quality of the feelings and emotions I hope to communicate, inspire and instil in their lives." Anton said.
The most compelling aspect of his art is the mood and sometimes the intensity of the moment captured in a balance of subtle and dramatic colours of concepts and recognisable images of life. The subject of the paintings is life itself, the people, the animals and nature.
"My childhood memories, which include very colourful aspects of African urban, rural and tribal life, evoke and inspire my art." Deeply rooted in his personal experiences are the African people and wild animals in the bush and on the dusty, sunny plains of Africa. The beauty of the female figure has always inspired him, and will be seen as a thread throughout his artist's career.
Aotearoa is his home now and New Zealand, the people and the beauty of all the many places that make New Zealand with all its vibrant colours and contours inspire him! "New Zealand is an artist's dream - the whole country is a canvas - some scenes have the wet paint still dripping off them." Anton was overheard saying.
Anton is passionate about life itself, and is reflected in how many things he has tried, failed, but mostly accomplished. Flying planes and helicopters, black belt in Karate, skydiving, scuba diving, and medical doctor.
Anton's talents were developed and refined through his studies at the Johannesburg School of Art. His dedication to his art has earned him a good standing in the art community of South Africa. Anton says after many years in New Zealand, he is inspired by the beauty and peacefulness, and feels he is poised to move to the next level in the art circles of New Zealand and across its borders. Anton uses only the highest quality professional art materials and conservational/museum quality framing techniques on those pieces that need framing. "I owe it to everyone who invests in my art, to give them the best in all respects, which will last many generations." Anton says.
The New Zealand character of his art, combined with his strong African influence, makes his art very powerful. Anton loves the excitement of the consulting and developing process, and it seems his style is not only in vogue, but also by indication from the designer field, it is set to expand. Anton also accepts private commission work from selected clients.
Anton was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1955. Together with his wife Liezel, and their recent triplets, Anton jnr, Luka and Mila, they have made Timaru their home. His 3 older children Nicolette, Hennie and Regardt live in Auckland, and remain an inspiration to him.
