What is Conservation Framing?
The number one enemies of your artwork are time and light. As your artwork ages, air pollution, paper degradation and the by-products of materials ageing, combine to cause yellowing, fading and discolouring. The UV content of the light we need to view our art degrades that art irreparably. Put simply, conservation framing employs the use of materials that have been proven to protect and maintain art in its original condition. The Saffron Gallery specialises in the conservation framing of original works of art. This involves the use of quality archival materials that will not leach acid or moisture into an art work. Techniques used are of a museum standard - works on paper are hinged to allow for easy reversal of the framing process. Art works are not trimmed, folded, stapled or subjected to commercial tapes or glues.

Some Helpful Hints
-
Ideally artwork should not be hung above fireplaces or radiators. Extreme or rapid changes in temperature can cause paper and wood to dry out and adhesives to fail.
-
Use two hooks on the wall to hang your pictures, set them about a quarter of the way in from either side of the picture. Where safety is critical, for example in children's bedrooms, ask your framer about glazing and security fittings.
-
Dust or brush frames with a soft cloth or brush. If fluid has to be used on the glass, apply it to a soft cloth first. Framing glass cleaner can be sourced form your local picture framer.
-
When carrying and transporting artwork, hold the frame firmly at both sides, not from the top edge. If you have to store your pictures, make sure that they are stacked vertically and the right way up. When stacking framed artwork, stand them glass to glass or back to back so that the hangers on the reverse do not damage the frame surface.
